John, Senate Republicans have done it again.

They’ve taken out their favorite tool of obstruction, the filibuster, to block even debate on the Freedom to Vote Act — critical voting rights legislation that would expand automatic voter registration, guarantee early voting periods, and provide more options for absentee voting.

Mitch McConnell claimed that protecting the right to vote is a “power grab” by Democrats. But the real power grab is Senate Republicans exploiting the filibuster to keep us from passing this important legislation all while Republican-controlled legislatures across the country pass restrictive voter suppression laws.

Quite honestly, it’s bullshit. Protecting and preserving our democracy shouldn’t be something we’re squabbling over. It’s time to put people over politics and actually get things done, and clearly, in order to do that the filibuster must go. The only solution is to get rid of it.

And when Val is in the U.S. Senate, she’ll push to do just that because she understands solving problems means we actually have to take action — including protecting and expanding access to the ballot box.
