BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights White House Announces Update on Operational Planning for COVID-19 Vaccines for Kids 5-11 The Administration's plan will include a comprehensive effort across the public and private sectors to ensure that the supply, the sites, and the support needed to get our nation’s children vaccinated and protected against COVID-19 will move forward. This effort includes schools as vaccination sites. Review the fact sheet. NASN is advocating for the NURSE Act (Nurses for Under-Resourced Schools Everywhere Act), which would give grants through the Department of Education to add registered school nurses in Title I schools where school nurses do not already exist. Paid advertisement NASN, AIM Partner on School-Located Vaccine Clinic Resources and Webinar Reports Describe Various Models of SLVs NASN and the Association of Immunization Managers (AIM) have partnered to develop new School-Located Vaccine Clinic (SLVs) reports, which were completed in tandem and should be reviewed as a complementary pair. They describe various models of SLVs implemented, successes and challenges, and opportunities to continue supporting SLVs to promote influenza, COVID-19, and childhood vaccinations. We are working on publishing actionable tools for immunization programs, school nurses, and more! LEARN MORE Opportunities to Improve Student & Community Health Through School-Located Vaccinations Join NASN and AIM at 3:30 p.m. EST Tuesday, October 26 for a webinar that will promote school-located vaccinations (SLVs) as a measure to improve and maintain a safe and healthy environment for students and the community. A brief overview of the AIM/NASN E-scan and Roundtable documents will be shared, and Kathy Marceau, a state immunization director, Dr. Eva Stone, Kentucky school nurse leader, and Dr. Joseph Ellison, Kentucky school administrator, will provide insight on how their role champions SLVs and the importance of their role to the success of SLVs. REGISTER NOW COVID-19 Updates ‘Mix and Match’ Approach for COVID-19 Booster Shots Now Allowed The Food and Drug Administration has amended the emergency use authorizations (EUA) for COVID-19 vaccines. Eligible individuals who have completed their primary vaccination may now receive any of the available COVID-19 vaccines as a heterologous (or “mix and match”) booster dose. Read more. Effective COVID-19 Vaccine Conversations The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has developed a free online course for healthcare providers to improve knowledge and competency to have effective COVID-19 vaccine conversations with patients and families, including the sharing of credible COVID-19 vaccination information and responding to misinformation. New CDC Resource on Multisystem Inflammatory Disease (MIS-C) CDC has developed and tested new materials to support healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children including factsheets for parents. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Two NEW Online CNE to Support Students with Chronic Health Conditions School Nurse-Led Case Management (SNLCM) – Application of the Nursing Process. Co-presented by NASN’s past president, Beth Mattey, school nurses will refresh their perspective about how the application of the nursing process guides the provision of SNLCM for vulnerable students. This free 1.0 CNE provides evidence-based current information, tools/resources, and strategies that will support the confidence and competence of the school nurse role in promoting health equity for students with a known (asthma) and suspected (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) health condition using SNLCM. Learn more. Pediatric to Adult Care Transition for Students with Lupus – The School Nurse Role in Care Coordination and Transition Planning. The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and NASN collaborated on this free 1.0 CNE. The course reviews the impact of pediatric onset lupus on children and teens and outlines the school nurse's role in contributing to a phased approach to transition planning from pediatric to adult care for continued effective and seamless self-management of the disease. Supporting ACR and NASN tools and resources will support the confidence and competence of the school nurse role in transition planning for students with lupus with an emphasis on health equity for at-risk students. Data from the National Diabetes Statistics Report 2020 found that in 2018, 210,000 children and adolescents younger than age 20 years —or 25 per 10,000 U.S. youths — had been diagnosed with diabetes. College Diabetes Network Hosts Events on Gen Z Patients with Diabetes The College Diabetes Network (CDN) is hosting two events for the medical community that will dig deeper into the minds of Gen Z patients living with diabetes. These one-hour panel discussions will feature a diverse group of young adults living with diabetes, including 2021 CDN NextGen Fellows who attended the ADA's 81st Scientific Sessions or the ADCES21 Annual Conference. School Nurse Leader Collaborative Strategies to Address the Challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic (1.0 CNE) Collaboration between school nurses and other disciplines and agencies can serve to strengthen the work of school nursing in times of public health crisis. This presentation will share the experience of a variety of collaborative structures employed by one school nurse leader, the school nurses she serves, and a local and state school health leadership community. Learners will explore the work and value of school nurse advisory groups, professional learning communities, local and state collaboration between school nurse leaders and school health leadership collaboration with local public health authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic response.
