Dear John,

October papers discuss trends in medical procedures closely tied to perinatal mental health.
Trends In Perinatal Mental Health Issues
Two papers in the October 2021 issue, Perinatal Mental Health And More, cover procedural trends in perinatal mental health issues.

With numerous states now requiring perinatal depression screening, Wan-Jung Hsieh and coauthors report the results of qualitative work drawing upon the experiences of a diverse group of women. Among their findings: "Patients [feel] dismissed through the screening process, especially when they did not present depressive symptoms…that pose an imminent risk."

Melissa Zochowski and coauthors examine rates of first-time cesarean section deliveries among low-risk commercially insured women between 2008 and 2017. Overall cesarean section rates for this population are about 25 percent.

The study found that the probability of a cesarean section was 3.5 percentage points higher, on average, among women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders than among those without them.

Today on Health Affairs Blog, Katie Keith explains the Congressional Budget Office analysis of the coverage provisions in the Build Back Better Act. The CBO estimates federal costs of $553.2 billion over ten years and a drop in the number of uninsured people of about 3.9 million people.

Blackford Middleton and coauthors discuss building the Learning Health System’s COVID-19 clinical practice guideline.

As part of the blog series "Value Assessment: Where Do We Go Post-COVID?" Darius Lakdawalla and coauthors discuss the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for how we approach value as a guide for allocating limited health care resources.

Check out our COVID-19 Resource Center for Health Affairs content about all things related to the pandemic.
