Advocates, Attorneys Push Back Against Plan to Transfer Women and Transgender People Off Rikers
This week, the city and state will begin transferring around 230 detainees being held at the troubled New York City jail complex to state correctional facilities in Westchester, what they say will help ease the ongoing humanitarian crisis at Rikers. But advocates are worried about the impact of the move, some calling it rushed and misguided.

Heat Killed More Than 100 NYC Residents Since 2010, Report Finds
Black New Yorkers were two times more likely to die from heat conditions than other city residents over the last decade, a report by New York City’s Health Department shows. 
 
Aguila Inc., which once ran more than 40 homeless shelter sites in Manhattan and the Bronx, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Manhattan federal court after the city cut ties with the troubled organization.
 
Supporters of the legislation say property owners, particularly large corporate landlords, should not have the power to abruptly deny leases to existing renters and kick them out of their homes. Property owners say it’ll saddle them with problem tenants.
 
If passed, the ‘Skip the Stuff’ bill would prohibit restaurants from providing plastic utensils, napkins and condiments, unless the customer requests them.
