Mandatory DEI and related trainings on campus are more than just annoying, argue ISI faculty Elizabeth Corey and Jeffrey Polet in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
They’re antithetical to the distinctive purpose of a university.
Universities are built on the “free contestation of ideas.” That means disagreement, and questioning core assumptions. Platonic dialogue, not Robin DiAngelo.
But mandatory trainings generally “assume that the truth is already known . . . about such complex and abstract things as ‘justice’ and ‘race’ and gender.’”
In other words, such “training” amounts to “indoctrination.”
