Andrew Gounardes: Democrat For New York

Friend,

Seven years ago, we saw first hand the havoc that climate change can wreck on Southern Brooklyn when Hurricane Sandy ravaged our communities.  As a private citizen, I saw the devastation firsthand and rallied my neighbors to provide hot meals to those in need.

Now as your State Senator, I am working with vulnerable communities to protect our shorefront residents and to stem the tide of climate change. Last week I held a Climate & Resiliency Town Hall at Kingsborough Community College where I was joined by officials from FEMA, Build It Back, NYC Office of Resiliency. We discussed updates on resiliency measures as well as our increasingly urgent climate crisis.

We have made great strides in addressing this crisis but there is much more to do. We need to take proactive action in order to prevent the disastrous effects of climate change.

This year we passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which is the most ambitious climate change bill in the country. This is only the first step. We need to continue bold leadership on the state level to help protect our communities from the devastation climate change can bring.

God forbid we have a repeat of Hurricane Sandy, I want our community to be prepared for it. I’m going to take every step I can in order to make our communities more resilient.

Sincerely,

Andrew Gounardes <signature>
