Dear Emgage advocates,
Republicans are blocking a qualified Muslim from a senior Biden Administration position.
The Senate is back in session for just a few short weeks, and it’s up to us to address the anti-Muslim bias against Dilawar Syed’s nomination to the Small Business Administration. In March, President Biden nominated Dilawar to be the Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration, which would make him the highest-ranking Muslim American in the Biden Administration.
Now, Republican members of the Senate Small Business Committee are blocking the confirmation of Dilawar's nomination by refusing to allow a quorum for the vote. We need your help to tell the Senate that Dilawar deserves a vote. Dilawar deserves a vote. Americans deserve a small business leader.
Under normal circumstances, he would have been confirmed. Republican senators, however, have repeatedly denied quorum to block Dilawar’s confirmation, emphasizing his national origin and religion in memos and his connection and work in the Muslim American community, all the while ignoring his qualifications as a business leader. Dilawar is eminently qualified. An entrepreneur with 20+ years of business experience alongside a history of public service from his role as the founding chairman of the California Entrepreneurship Task Force to his recent responsibilities on the Silicon Valley Recovery Roundtable helping the region bounce back from COVID. During the Obama Administration, he chaired the White House’s AAPIs’ Economic Growth Committee to help small businesses recover after the 2008 financial crisis in under-served regions. He has been endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and more than three dozen leading business groups.
It is well-past time for the Senate to perform its constitutional duty and hold a vote on Dilawar — so he can start lifting entrepreneurs and small business owners across America. Please take the next 2 minutes to Tell Senate Committee members Dilawar deserves a vote.
In solidarity,
Wa'el Alzayat, CEO of Emgage Action
