Republicans are holding voting rights hostage.
First, Senate Republicans shamefully filibustered the For the People Act.
Today, every Senate Republican continued their assault on voting rights by filibustering the Freedom to Vote Act — legislation that will protect the sacred right to vote and end partisan gerrymandering.
We can’t let this stand. We must reform the filibuster — an arcane rule that has historically been weaponized against civil rights and voting rights. The filibuster is standing between us and protecting the future of our democracy and the integrity of our elections.
Defending the integrity of our democracy and our elections should never be a partisan issue. Yet, time and time again, Senate Republicans have refused even to let these democracy-saving bills be debated.
It is essential that the Senate act on voting rights — just as we did in the House of Representatives. We must reform the filibuster to save our democracy, and we must act on this legislation by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
