Howdy Comrades!
Welcome to issue 18 of the Houston DSA Newsletter, now old enough to vote, as you should November 5th! More information on that later in the email, so keep reading. I'm Stephen Adkison, Houston DSA's Communications Secretary. Thanks for reading, and for doing all the work that I'll be writing about in these newsletters.
This is intended as a way to stay updated on the manythings that our chapter does, so I think you should share the subscription link with a friend, and bring them out to anything we do!
Without further ado, here is issue 18 of the Houston DSA newsletter!

Houston has a municipal election coming up Tuesday, November 5th, and Houston DSA has endorsed two candidates and two ballot proposals! Click here to read our full breakdown and to find a voting location near you! Special thanks to everyone who braved the chilly weather yesterday to canvass for our candidates!
Ashton Woods, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Houston, is running for City Council At Large 5. He wants to re-imagine public safety as community care, looking to things such as health care investment especially for populations without, housing justice, and public transportation guided by constituent, and not donor, inputs and needs. Click here for more info, and a link to donate to his campaign!
Rob Block, firefighter and experienced organizer, is running for Texas House District 148. He looks to constituent engagement as a foundation for issues such as responsible infrastructure development, defending and strengthening public education, community health and safety, and repealing anti-immigrant legislation. Click here for more info, and a link to donate to his campaign!
We have also endorsed a NO vote on Texas Constitutional Amendment #4. If passed, this would prevent our future elected officials from considering a progressive income tax to make sure the rich pay their fair share. Finally, we endorsed a YES vote on Harris County METRO Prop A, “METRO Next” Transit Proposal. METRO’s plan is the result of months of community input. It’s a good first step: a $3.5 billion investment in light rail, bus rapid transit, dedicated regional bus transit, and local infrastructure.
Don't forget to do your part to help these campaigns in the next week (keep an eye out on emails for more opportunities) and to vote November 5th!

In honor of everyone's favorite early fall holiday, the Reading Group has picked some light, Halloween-themed readings for y'all the meeting tomorrow.
The first, "Socialists Must Reclaim Halloween," is actually a video by acclaimed author China Mieville. Reactionary ghouls may praise the holiday as living proof of humanity’s greedy self-interest, and some socialists, like late Hugo Chavez, may dismiss it as a pageant of imperialist terror. But for Mieville, Halloween is a source of the imaginative ammunition necessary for socialist politics — a celebration of the chaotic social over the orderly individual, an intuitive solidarity with those called monsters, and a principled refusal to be afraid of the dark.
The second, "Zombies: Apocalypse or Rebellion?" by UH History professor David McNally, and author of the book "Monsters of the Market: Zombies, Vampires and Global Capitalism" explores the deathscape that is the Capitalist world we live in. A more recent interview with McNally is worth your time as well!
The Houston DSA Reading Group is open to members and non-members alike and aims to be accessible to all attendees regardless of background knowledge or expertise. We hope to see you there!

Last Monday, the Education Working Group discussed our Child Watch program and how to get it going full steam. We want to be able to offer child watch for all of our general meetings, and some of that will be on you: we need volunteers! Many working-class people cannot afford a babysitter to come out to our general meetings, and we want to be as inclusive as possible. If you are willing to supervise a child for a couple of hours, please reach out to Texas Cook on Mattermost or at the next general meeting.
State and Local forwent their usual meeting to attend Texas Signal's talk with the democratic primary candidates for the 2020 Texas Senate race. Those that attended got an up-front look at the candidates, helping the rest of us stay informed. State and Local is the place to be for any politics and policy wonks in our chapter, so if that describes you, make sure to go out to their meetings!
On Thursday the Events Committee met to discuss future plans in the works and still to be formed! This covers everything from helping set up general meetings to the fun social events we all love. If event planning is your jam, or you just want to make sure we calendar in our relaxed break times, come out to the next meeting!
