The Freedom to Vote Act was brought to a vote in the Senate today.
This voting rights legislation would guarantee universal early voting, universal vote by mail, and automatic same-day voter registration. It would make Election Day a federal holiday, ban partisan gerrymandering, protect against election subversion, and essentially overturn many voter suppression laws passed in GOP-held states.
All 50 Democratic senators voted for it. And not a single Republican. Using the filibuster, they killed the bill.
We knew this was coming, but that doesn’t make it any easier to swallow.
At Groundwork Project we believe the right to the ballot box is sacred beyond measure. So we’re not going to miss a beat in this fight.
A few weeks ago my team told you about the new voting rights initiative we are helping launch with the King family: Give Us The Ballot . Along with an incredible slate of groups like Black Voters Matter and the Black Male Voter Project, we are raising funds for local organizers across the country fighting voter suppression on the front lines.
This is Groundwork’s mission in action: investing in the hyperlocal groups that carry progress on their backs, from Mississippi to West Virginia. It’s work that is more critical than ever, as Washington is in a deadlock and our democracy is on the line.
If you are furious with what happened in the Senate today, you are not alone. I urge you to turn that anger into action and give now to Give Us The Ballot so that we can immediately put your dollars to use in the fight for voting rights nationwide. [[link removed]]
