Today, in yet another brazen act of corrupt obstructionism, Senate Republicans filibustered critical legislation to save our democracy.

There’s no mistaking what’s going on: Republicans are willing to completely undermine our democracy for partisan gain and corporate cash.

The Freedom to Vote Act protects the basic functioning of our democracy, but Senate Republicans blocked debate on the bill because there’s absolutely no defense for their corruption - and they know it. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin claimed he could win Republican votes with his revised version of the For the People Act. He was wrong.

Democratic Senators like Joe Manchin need to get real: Republicans will never help pass basic voting rights legislation because they’ve chosen corruption over democracy.

For example, it took Texas Republicans less than 30 days to pass racist gerrymandered maps that will entrench Republican majorities in the state for at least another decade and potentially cost Democrats control of the House of Representatives.

And if they’re allowed to subvert our democracy, Republicans in Congress will simply keep the payoffs flowing to their billionaire donors and big corporations.

It’s obvious why they don’t want to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. The legislation would protect and expand the right to vote for all Americans, stop partisan gerrymandering, and finally end the role of toxic big and dark money in our democracy. It would be the most transformative democracy and anti-corruption legislation in a generation.
