Friend,

The future of women's reproductive health now rests with this Supreme Court – a Court whose conservative majority was cemented by Donald Trump's appointees.

Thankfully, President Biden's Justice Department has called on the Supreme Court to block Texas' newly enacted abortion ban – the most restrictive in the country. While I urge our nation's highest court to make the right decision, and while I hope the undeniable 48-year legal precedent of Roe v. Wade will be upheld, there is genuine cause for fear. Women's fundamental human rights must not hinge on the beliefs of individual justices. No American's fundamental human rights should hinge on the beliefs of individual justices.

Congress must take action.

There is one clear-cut pathway at the federal level that would protect women's fundamental human rights, block Texas' extremist law, and prevent anything like it from taking hold across the country: the Women's Health Protection Act.

The Women's Health Protection Act, a bill I introduced, would guarantee a woman's right to make her own reproductive healthcare decisions. It would stop right-wing extremists from designing clever legal runarounds that are specifically designed to undermine the rule of law and legal precedent to achieve political and ideological gains. That is the sole reason for the Texas law. It was crafted intentionally to evade all legal responsibility. A bait and switch designed to hurt the majority by deceitfully imposing the will of the minority, in direct contradiction to our legal system of precedent.

The Women's Health Protection Act – which was already passed by the House – would enshrine a woman's right to healthcare at the federal level and ensure it is safeguarded in all situations. That is what the majority of Americans want, and it is what our system of laws demands.

With a decision from the Court likely coming in mere days, I am once again asking this team to speak out and compel the Senate to act. Time is of the essence, and I need 5,000 supporters to make their voices heard before my 11:59 p.m. deadline:

Friend, it is no exaggeration to say that we are balanced on the precipice of a monstrous violation of fundamental human rights if the Supreme Court allows Texas' anti-women law to stand. Our country could return to the dark days when every single woman's personal decision about when to have a child was controlled by the government – back to the days when abortion care was driven underground. When it was life-threateningly dangerous and unsafe.

It's up to us to take action to protect reproductive health for Americans in every zip code. Thank you for adding your voice.

Dick
