John, A majority of the United States Congress and a majority of the American people support the passage of one of the most comprehensive democracy measures in a generation. The Freedom to Vote Act would expand early and mail-in voting options for all Americans, make Election Day a federal holiday, thwart voter suppression, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and protect free and fair elections. But there remains a major roadblock to passing this sweeping legislation: the filibuster, an antiquated Senate practice that allows a minority of US Senators to hold votes hostage. It has already been used this year to block the For the People Act and legislation to lift the debt ceiling, and it nearly killed the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package passed earlier this year. The solution is clear: To pass the Freedom to Vote Act and reclaim our democracy, we must eliminate the filibuster. State legislators across the country who are allied with Donald Trump and the Big Lie are systematically chipping away at voting rights which took decades to establish. The clear and immediate remedy is the Freedom to Vote Act. But as long as the filibuster exists, the chances of passing this landmark bill are dwindling by the day. This “Jim Crow relic,” as former President Obama has rightly called it, is being used to block overwhelmingly popular legislation and stifle the will of the voters.
