Today, the Senate is voting on the Freedom to Vote Act. This legislation would protect and expand the right to vote here in North Carolina and across the country.
The bill would make Election Day a national holiday, help get dark money out of politics, and protect early voting and voting by mail from Republican attacks. In the U.S. Senate, I would be proud to vote YES on this important legislation.
For years, there was bipartisan agreement around promoting the right to vote, and this bill should be a commonsense, bipartisan approach to bolstering this fundamental right.
But instead, it is expected to fail. Mitch McConnell even said that it was his "hope and anticipation" that zero Republicans would vote for this legislation. Republican leaders in Washington are staging an all-out assault on our right to vote.
This is why it is critical that Democrats expand our Senate majority, and this race in North Carolina is one of our best chances to do that.

It’s anti-democratic and anti-American that Republican leaders are still working all these years later to strip us of this fundamental right.
With our democracy and the right to vote under attack, we cannot wait any longer. I don’t want my grandchildren to still be fighting this when they’re my age — the Senate must pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
We can win real progress on this important issue if we expand our Senate majority. That’s the opportunity we have here in North Carolina, but we need your help.
This is yet another example of why it’s so important that we elect leaders who will stand up for — not against — North Carolinians’ fundamental rights, and that’s what I’ll do in the U.S. Senate.
