Cal Matters:
Newsom declares drought emergency across California
Did you see this news, John?
Governor Newsom just expanded California's drought emergency to cover the entire state of California. As you probably know, thousands of wells across the state are projected to go dry this year. If our consumption trends hold, up to a thousand more will dry next year.
Many of us here in the Central Valley have long dealt with the struggles that droughts create. I made my career as a teacher, but my husband John and I raised our kids on an apple orchard where he worked. We know firsthand how important water is to our economy and the way of life for our farmers, farmworkers, and rural communities who lack access to clean drinking water.
This emergency declaration is an important reminder that we need to be honest about the threat of climate change. It's only getting worse, and it’s OUR community that bears the brunt while politicians like Kevin McCarthy get to play politics in Washington and ignore it.
We need a leader in Congress who will treat this issue with the seriousness it deserves. That's why I'm running, and it's why I'm asking you for your support:
I'm ready to bring my firsthand knowledge of agriculture and water issues to Congress, but I need to know you're with me. Add your name to my petition to help send Congress a strong message that California's drought needs attention.
Sincerely,
Marisa
