John -- According to a report in The Hill, conservative map drawers have one main goal during redistricting: “shore up as many potentially vulnerable Republican incumbents as possible for as long as possible [to] create a more durable base of representatives in Congress.”

As we’ve seen, that means ignoring population trends from the 2020 Census, blocking out calls for fairness by constituents, and diluting the voices of communities of color.

In North Carolina, early map drafts crack and pack communities of interest. In Texas, the governor is expected to sign maps that eliminate nearly every competitive district -- and in Ohio, even the Republican governor expressed concerns about maps.

We can’t let GOP map drawers create maps that will bolster their 2011 gerrymanders. Will you make a donation right now to help ensure we win battles like those ongoing in North Carolina, Texas, and Ohio?

These are just a few states in the midst of drawing maps for the next decade -- and it’s up to us to be engaged in the process now.

The Hill made the important point that “Republicans are still benefiting from favorable maps they drew themselves after the 2010 midterm elections.”

And their last round of gerrymandering is why conservative map drawers can now ignore “demographic and political changes that have taken place over the preceding ten years” when drawing maps this year.

It is our responsibility to ensure every map drawer creates districts that accurately represent data from the 2020 Census.
