Hi Friend,
I’m DaShawn, GLAAD’s Programs
Officer, Communities of Color, and I’m in Atlanta this weekend to accelerate
acceptance in the South. Thank you for being one of our key
supporters. I wanted to give you an update on some of the work we are
doing and ask for you to join me to make a difference in the lives of
LGBTQ people across our nation.
GLAAD conducted a national poll in
2014 that found Southerners tend to be more uncomfortable with LGBTQ
people and relationships than
Americans on the whole, so we launched our Southern Stories program to
help elevate and empower LGBTQ people in the South and increase
equality and acceptance throughout the region.
-
Our work is
cultural,
including empowering and training young activists and
leaders, like Dorothy
McIntosh, GLAAD’s campus ambassador at Texas A&M, who’s working to
increase acceptance for LGBTQ students at her historically
conservative university.
-
Our work is
legislative, as when we created public pressure on the governor of Oklahoma
to veto a bill that would allow adoption and foster care agencies to
discriminate against LGBTQ couples.
-
Our work is
hard-hitting and rapid response, as when we condemned a Georgia state
representative who said that people living with HIV and AIDS should be
quarantined. Now we’re going even further, working to help produce
+Life, a series of videos and other digital assets to help combat the
stigma faced by those living with HIV.
-
Our work is
impactful, as
we recently launched an initiative to conduct specific GLAAD Media
Institute (GMI) trainings in the South. With over 100 people already
trained in the past couple of months, we are engaging new Southern
voices to tell their own stories, highlight their successes and share
the challenges they face. To date, we’ve conducted trainings in
Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, and Louisanna. With several others
planned in North Carolina,
Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, and Mississippi.
I’m so proud to be a part of GLAAD’s courageous work across
the South, and today, I’m asking you to be a part of it, too. If
you’re able, will you donate $25, $50 or $100 to help power GLAAD’s
work in the South?
Thank you so much for reading, and
for being part of the nationwide community creating acceptance and
equality for all LGBTQ people.
Hope to see you there!
