Here we go.
The Senate is voting THIS AFTERNOON to begin debate on the landmark Freedom To Vote Act.
As a reminder, this is the retooled version of the earlier For the People Act (a.k.a. H.R.1/S.1) crafted to accommodate Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
- The Freedom To Vote Act is a package of reforms to protect our democracy from current Republican attempts to sabotage it.
- It will protect the rights of all Americans to vote safely and securely.
- It will fight the billionaire “dark money” corrupting our elections.
- It will end partisan gerrymandering.
- And — perhaps most crucially — it will block Trumpist governors and state legislators from giving themselves the power to override election results they don’t like.
You may recall that Senator Manchin was confident he could get 10 of his Republican colleagues to support this compromise legislation (and thereby prevent these critical democracy protections from being filibustered into oblivion).
Of course, no politician who actually believes in democracy and is operating in good faith should oppose *any* of the commonsense provisions in the Freedom To Vote Act.
But “actually believes in democracy” and “is operating in good faith” don’t seem to apply in Donald Trump’s Republican Party.
So it will be surprising if even ONE Republican senator — much less 10 — is prepared to support the Freedom To Vote Act.
Instead, we fully expect that Senate Republicans will once again stonewall legislation that is both necessary and popular — by exploiting procedural gimmicks to prevent the Senate from even debating the bill.
Tell EVERY Republican in the Senate:
Vote YES today to proceed with debate on the Freedom To Vote Act. If you don’t like the bill or want to suggest changes, you can say so when it’s up for debate. But if you won’t even let it come up for debate, you will be exposing your cowardice, your fealty to Donald Trump and his Big Lie, and your contempt for democracy itself.
Add your name now.
Thanks for taking action.
For democracy,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
