What does today’s announcement mean?
The Biden administration announced that it is considering a 20-year ban on sulfide-ore copper mining on federal public lands in the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota.
The announcement commences a mineral withdrawal process in the Superior National Forest. This process begins with a comprehensive study of the likely ecological, economic, environmental, recreational, and cultural impacts of sulfide-ore copper mining if it were permitted in the watershed of the Boundary Waters. The science-based study will be a major step toward full protection of the Boundary Waters from sulfide-ore copper mining.
The Trump administration cancelled a previous mineral withdrawal, then hid the data from the press, the public, and Congress. The Biden administration announcement today will result in a fully completed study that could lead to a 20-year ban on such mining.
