The MCB 6 Step Guide to Keeping Mosques Safe and Secure

The Muslim Council of Britain recognizes the ongoing challenges places of worship face both as a result of the pandemic but also in light of increasing Islamophobia and hate crime. Mosques are places of sanctuary, worship and reflection. They also serve as support centers for communities for education, social and welfare issues, bereavement and loss as well as celebration.

This guide has been designed to provide useful advice and tips on how Mosque management, staff, and volunteers can mitigate any risks and potential harms to their service users. We want to make sure all visitors, congregants, and mosque teams can all be safe when using places of worship.

Hate Crime: Report It!

In the year ending March 2021, 45% of all recorded religious hate crime offences in England & Wales were targeted against Muslims.*

This makes Muslims the most commonly targeted religious group in England and Wales, and Islamophobic hate crimes the most prevalent in nature.

❗If you've witnessed - or been subject to - an Islamophobic hate crime, please report it immediately. We continue to contend with underreporting, and so, latest figures may well not reflect the true scale of the problem.

COP26: National Muslim Faith Organisations Unite in Call for Climate Action

The Muslim Council of Britain has joined in issuing a statement alongside national Muslim faith organisations in the UK and Ireland, calling upon world leaders to commit to climate justice, a just transition to a green economy & more support for those most vulnerable to climate change at COP26 in Glasgow. The action is part of the wider #Faiths4Climate campaign.

Black History Matters

The Muslim Council of Britian is delighted to welcome the start of Black History Month. Alongside this year’s theme ‘Proud to Be,’ the MCB has adopted the theme ‘Black History Matters’.

As part of our Proudly Muslim & Black Project, we will be highlighting the immense contributions Black Muslim communities have made to the UK, their respective journeys, and their hopes for the future.

In addition, the MCB will be preparing for the launch of our ‘Proudly Muslim & Black’ Report, which contains a series of reflective essays, detailing the contributions and experiences of Black British Muslims in Britain. The report will explore the intersections between race, faith and community in contemporary Britain.

Commenting on the start of Black History Month and the upcoming launch of the Proudly Muslim & Black Report, MCB Secretary General Zara Mohammed said:

“Black Muslim communities have long played an integral role in British society and yet their contributions have been undervalued and overlooked. Often, they are seen as a minority within a minority, and sadly, marginalised – even within wider Muslim communities.
The Proudly Muslim & Black Report aims to help address this disconnect. Through it, we also hope to understand the lived experience of Black British Muslim communities across, as well as their aspirations for, various sectors of society; including academia, the economy, the criminal justice system, sports and the arts.

The celebration of Black history should not be limited to one month; it matters all year round. The MCB remains committed to amplifying and celebrating the voices of Black British Muslims and addressing anti-Black racism throughout the year.”
