We have a big day ahead of us for democracy reform! Sometime after 1:45 pm
ET today, the Senate will hold a procedural vote on The Freedom to Vote
Act (the current version of the For the People Act). Republicans are
expected to stop the bill using the filibuster, which will tee up a big
filibuster showdown once the Senate is done with reconciliation. We need
you to speak up now, so your senators know you’re watching. 

Without a functional democracy in which everyone is included and
represented, all the issues we care about deeply are at risk. [ [link removed] ]That is
why it is so important that you click here to call your senators and
demand they fix the filibuster and pass the Freedom to Vote Act before it
is too late.

Despite the fact that Republicans currently are the minority in the
Senate, they’re using the filibuster to block crucial structural democracy
reforms. Extremist lawmakers have introduced over 400 anti-voter bills
across the country this year alone, and now these same lawmakers are
preparing to draw congressional maps that will disenfranchise voters for
the next decade. This is unacceptable!

Here is what the Freedom to Vote Act would do for our democracy:

* Voter empowerment and access. Through measures such as automatic voter
registration, same-day registration, and restoring portions of the
Voting Rights Act, the Freedom to Vote Act ensures that everyone is
included and represented in our democracy and has unimpeded
opportunities to participate.
* Money in politics. A constitutional amendment is needed to overturn
the chaos that Citizens United and related Supreme Court decisions
unleashed into our campaign finance system. The Freedom to Vote Act
starts that process by eliminating “dark money” by requiring
disclosure of all political spending (including online ads), cutting
off cooperation between candidates and super PACs, and empowering the
Federal Election Commission to truly enforce campaign finance law.
* Redistricting and Fair Maps. The Freedom to Vote Act will ban partisan
gerrymandering and provide a specific criteria for states to abide by
for federal redistricting. 
* Preventing Election Subversion. The Freedom to Vote Act will prevent
the arbitrary removal of local election administrators, increase
protections for election workers, prohibit deceptive practices that
discourage voting, and increase protections of election records and
infrastructure.

It is crucial that Democrats show our commitment to fighting hard to
ensure that everyone has the unimpeded right to participate in our

The stakes are high, but by continuing our grassroots work on a national
scale, we can ensure that the Freedom to Vote Act remains a top and urgent
priority for senators upon returning to D.C.
