Our team is celebrating a tremendous success: A trafficker has been stopped in Uganda. On October 8, a man was convicted of multiple charges of child trafficking and sentenced to life in prison in Uganda. This marks the first life sentence given in a child trafficking case in the country. Our Uganda team has worked with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) since April 2020, providing support for the investigation and prosecution of this trafficker. Read more here.
This convicted trafficker was the headmaster of a boarding school, where he promised scholarships to vulnerable young boys. Unbeknownst to the students’ families, he would sexually abuse them, rather than providing the promised quality education and care for their children.
Victim testimony was an important part of convicting this trafficker, and we worked to ensure the survivors felt safe testifying. HTI and the International Justice Mission (IJM) worked together with the ODPP to make sure the children could tell their stories from a safe, remote location through video instead of in the same room as their trafficker.
