Last week, I had a bunch of links to share, and I lost them all. I’m guessing I got squirreled by Twitter, but somewhere between hitting CTRL-C in the notes where I keep these all week and CTRL-V into a doc, they went missing.
I haven’t found them all, but I have enough to share that I thought I’d make up for that this week with a very special missing links edition of Local Edition.
Read:
* In the Missouri Independent, Rudi Keller reports on the new owners who bought and are working to revive former Gannett newspapers ([link removed]) .

* Check out the 2021 winners of the Nonprofit News Awards ([link removed]) . Congrats!
* Ian Bradley wrote for Poynter about living in his van while working in local news in California ([link removed]) .
* Chances are you’ve already seen this in-depth McKay Coppins piece about Alden Global Capital ([link removed]) in The Atlantic, but in case you missed it, it’s a must-read.
* Follow it up with Marc Tracy’s piece in The New York Times about Stewart Bainum Jr. and his plans to rival the Baltimore Sun ([link removed]) .
* There are some great lessons about where local news should be headed ([link removed]) (and in many cases, already is) in this Nieman Lab piece by ProPublica’s Connor Goodwin.
* And in my obits newsletter for the Tampa Bay Times, I shared some tips on writing your own obit ([link removed]) (which might seem morbid but is actually a great writing exercise).

* Check out this LION Q&A and learn how El Tímpano is growing its revenue stream through civic partnerships ([link removed]) .
* And check out this study from the Niskanen Center, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, on the link between local news and the health of our democracy ([link removed]) .
Listen:
* Ellen Clegg, a former Boston Globe editor, and Dan Kennedy, a Northeastern University professor, have a new podcast — “What Works: The Future of Local News.” ([link removed])
Get $:
* The Next Challenge for Media and Journalism offers grants in various amounts for for-profit and nonprofit startups ([link removed]) . Apply by Nov. 7.
* The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Connected Coastlines reporting project ([link removed]) .
That’s it for me. I’m thinking about saving all the links I collect and sending a big links edition newsletter once a month. Thumbs up? Down? Let me know what you think and thanks, as always, for reading!
