Dear John,
Yesterday, hundreds of thousands of Jews and people from all backgrounds packed synagogues across America and around the world as part of AJC’s #ShowUpForShabbat campaign in memory of the 11 Jewish souls murdered in Pittsburgh on this day one year ago.
Today we must take action for the safety and security of American Jewry.
As AJC’s recently-released landmark survey on antisemitism in America showed, approximately nine out of every ten American Jews believe Jew-hatred is a problem in the U.S. and one in three feel compelled to hide their Jewishness.
This cannot stand.
National Day of Action Against Antisemitism
AJC has declared today a National Day of Action Against Antisemitism – a day dedicated to educating our fellow citizens about this shape-shifting evil and to advocating for more robust measures to combat it.
Across the United States, AJC leaders are marking this Day of Action in conjunction with dozens of governors, mayors, and other elected officials. The governors of Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Iowa, and Virginia; the mayors of Cleveland, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Oakland, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., and many other elected officials across the country have issued proclamations declaring today a day of awareness about the rise of antisemitism in America. See the full list here.
As powerful as it is that hundreds of elected leaders are standing with us today in the effort to combat antisemitism, we know that we must work every day to rid our world of this hatred.
In the coming days, we at AJC will be unveiling a brand-new antisemitism education resource that will provide you with the tools to learn about and call out antisemitism both online and off. Stay tuned for more information.
I’m left with these three questions:
How can we honor the lives of Joyce Fienberg, Richard Gottfried, Rose Mallinger, Jerry Rabinowitz, Cecil Rosenthal, David Rosenthal, Bernice Simon, Sylvan Simon, Daniel Stein, Melvin Wax, and Irving Younger?
How can we prevent what happened one year ago from ever happening again?
And how can we reverse the tide of antisemitism so that our children never have to experience the hate that our parents and grandparents endured and that we continue to encounter today?
I find answers in AJC’s work.
Please join AJC in this critically important work. Together we can prevent attacks like the ones in Pittsburgh, Poway, and Halle. Together we can shape a world free of antisemitism.
You can reply to this email or contact any one of AJC’s 22 offices across America or 11 offices around the globe to get involved.
Sincerely,
Melanie Maron Pell
