MontCo workers support vaccines, oppose mandates
“County employee unions aren’t the problem here,” Amy Millar, assistant to the president of UFCW 1994 MCGEO testified on Tuesday, calling on the Montgomery County Council to reject legislation to mandate COVID-19 vaccines for all county employees. The union is “unequivocally” pro-vaccine, Millar testified, noting that 78% of the County workforce have already submitted documentation that they are fully vaccinated. But the proposed legislation oversteps the Council’s authority, Millar told the Council, mandating conditions of employment and threatening to harm the community’s access to public transit on Ride-On where there are already 60 vacancies, a number she warned could grow with this mandate. Earlier this month, Local 1994 expressed its concern that the legislation, introduced by County Councilmembers Will Jawando and Hans Reimer, sought to upend "the collaborative approach we have developed with our employees." Local 1994 called on the County Council to slow down implementation of this bill and allow negotiated policy to work.

Presidential candidate Ronald Reagan writes to PATCO President Robert Poli with this promise: if the union endorses Reagan "I will take whatever steps are necessary to provide our air traffic controllers with the most modern equipment available and to adjust staff levels and work days so that they are commensurate with achieving a maximum degree of public safety." He got the endorsement. Nine months after the election, he fires the air traffic controllers for engaging in an illegal walkout over staffing levels and working conditions - 1980
