Hispanic Heritage Month may have wrapped up last week, but recognizing our
Hispanic heritage is not limited to just one month. I want you to know why this
is so important to me.

I want to celebrate my mother. She showed me more love than I have ever known
because she took a chance on me, a kid nobody wanted, and built a family for my
sister and me. She never had a job outside the home, but she worked as hard as
anyone I’ve ever met. As an immigrant from Mexico, she knew the importance of
family, faith and community, and she instilled those values in me.

I’m proud of her journey, and it is because of women like my mother that we
celebrate the Latinx community during Hispanic Heritage Month.
