Friend—We're halfway through our Fall Campaign, and we need your help. Newspapers are closing across the country, and we count on readers like you to keep independent journalism going. Will you donate now?

Friend,

Here's a fact that should terrify you: over the last 15 years, 2,100 newspapers have gone out of business.

Local daily papers are disappearing due to declining circulation and advertising revenue. Weekly papers are an endangered species. The newspapers that are left are being downsized or consolidated out of existence.

Big cities like Oakland, Denver, and Tampa have lost major dailies. Pittsburgh—a city of 302,000—has no daily newspaper at all.

But this isn't just a crisis for the newspaper industry. It's a crisis for democracy—and it's happening at the worst possible time. In the U.S., the president is engaged in massive corruption and is lying to the American people on an hourly basis while one of the most important elections of our lives is right around the corner.

The good news is that while the business model of the for-profit newspaper is failing, our model of nonprofit independent journalism is surging. We don't rely on advertisers for revenue, and we don't have a corporate overlord demanding higher profit margins. Our revenue comes directly from you, our readers, and every nickel you donate goes into producing the hard-hitting, substantive journalism you count on us to provide.

Common Dreams is here because of you, but our Fall Campaign must be reach its goal for us to keep going during these crucial times.

Will you chip in to help us meet our must-hit goal of $50,000 by the end of October to help fund the non-profit, independent news that our democracy needs to survive?
