Throughout her first term, Mayor Cantrell has emphasized a holistic approach connecting public safety to public health, recognizing that if our people have stable roofs over their heads, if they know where their next meals are coming from, if they have jobs that pay what they deserve, then we will see a reduction in crime.
She has already made strides towards enacting meaningful prevention policy by establishing the city's first-ever Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The office is dedicated to delivering public health interventions to stop violence, studying their impacts to promote continuous improvement, and finding alternative funding sources to continuously scale up prevention efforts.
Moving forward, Mayor Cantrell will look to provide post-detention intervention, support, and development programs for youth and adults alike to reduce recidivism and make our communities stronger. She is also committed to arresting perpetrators of violent crime and having NOPD meet our community where it is to address crime as it happens.
