News from Representative Allred

Dear John,

The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. As a former voting rights attorney, I have seen firsthand the effects of provisions to suppress the vote that states like Texas have recently passed. That’s why I’m taking action and leading the charge in Congress to expand access to the ballot box and restore confidence in our political system. This week, I led a group of my colleagues in urging the Senate to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.

The Freedom to Vote Act would:
  • Set national standards for voter registration, vote by mail and early voting options.
  • Make Election Day a federal holiday.
  • End partisan gerrymandering where politicians can essentially pick their voters.
  • Bolster election security and protect against interference.

But we must act now.
Here in Texas, lawmakers have already passed a map intended to consolidate political power, without regard for the census data which is supposed to guide their process. I urge Senators on both sides of the aisle to pass this commonsense legislation that will protect our democracy for generations to come.

Passing the Freedom to Vote Act is a step in the right direction toward repairing the deep political divide in our nation and restoring trust in our electoral system. Under the Freedom to Vote Act, the process of drawing Congressional districts would be standardized and nonpartisan so that neither party could manipulate their electorate for their own gain.

No matter what party you belong to or where you live, I will always fight to ensure that every Texan is able to have their voice heard in our democracy.

Sincerely,
