Jack, last week, the Biden administration announced its decision to lift travel restrictions for people from Canada and Mexico who provide proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
While welcome, the decision raises another important issue: If the U.S. can welcome vaccinated travelers through ports of entry, why is it still blocking asylum-seekers under the unsound Title 42 policy?
Sign the petition to President Biden: Seeking asylum is a human right. End Title 42, and replace it with a dignified, compassionate process.

Recently, Dr. Anthony Fauci refuted the disgustingly racist lie that immigrants are to blame for COVID, and said that expelling immigrants is not how we solve this crisis. And a growing chorus of epidemiologists and public health experts condemn Title 42 because it “breeds distrust in the CDC and sends a message that xenophobia trumps health and safety.”
Title 42 denies asylum-seekers' basic legal rights under the guise of public health. It is not making us safer. It’s institutionalized racism masquerading as public health policy.
U.S. and international refugee laws were created in the wake of World War II and the Holocaust to ensure countries did not summarily deport people without determining whether they could face persecution if returned. They have allowed millions of the world's most vulnerable to find safe harbor.
Instead of relying on xenophobic tropes blaming immigrants for the spread of disease, Biden could use any combination of alternatives proven to combat COVID, like testing, quarantine, and vaccination. But instead, the administration continues to double down on a bad faith effort designed by white nationalists. It's an absurd position to take, especially considering Biden's pledge to end the previous administration's “detrimental asylum policies.”
With Title 42, the United States has turned its back on the most vulnerable, abdicated its leadership, and violated its legal obligations. We have to reverse this moral failure. Add your name to urge the Biden administration to immediately lift Title 42 and restore access to asylum.
