In a moment, I’m going to ask you to join me, and several of my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, to support Tom’s campaign for Governor. [[link removed]] First, let me tell you why.

Before I had the privilege of serving California in the U.S. Senate, I served as its Secretary of State and Chair of the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State. As California Secretary of State, it was my job to make sure that folks had the tools and information necessary to get to the polls and make their voices heard at the ballot box.

So, you could say I am passionate about protecting and expanding the right to vote. Now, that right is in imminent danger. Across the country, GOP-led state governments introduced 425 bills with provisions that restrict voting access in 49 states during the 2021 legislative sessions.

I can tell you from experience: Electing Democratic Secretaries of State and Governors who understand that the right to vote is one that should be afforded to every American is more important now than ever to protect your voting rights.

I know Tom Perez will be that leader for Maryland because he’s fought to protect voting rights for years.

• He confronted GOP voter suppression and took on the most voting rights cases in DOJ history as head of the Civil Rights Division.

• As Chair of the DNC, Tom worked to increase access to voting information, prevent individuals from being purged from voter rolls, and expand access to the political landscape for communities of color.

• And when Donald Trump spread baseless accusations of voter fraud in 2020, Tom ensured our party had the tools to take him on and did everything to hold him accountable for undermining our democracy.
