Hi team,
When I was growing up, my parents’ top concern when it came to my safety was my physical well-being. But as a parent in 2021, I have to worry about the safety and mental well being of my two young girls just as much.
More and more information is coming to light recently that social media giants like Facebook are willing to do anything to maximize their profits, no matter the harm that comes to their users. Their engagement algorithms sow conflict, spread misinformation, and harm the mental health of millions of young users.
It’s good that Facebook has paused their “Instagram for Kids” project after pressure from my colleagues and me, but a pause doesn’t go far enough. This new app would be a disaster for our children, and Facebook needs to abandon the project altogether and focus instead on making their current services safe and healthy for everyone.
We can’t let this continue, which is why I’ve been working with my colleagues to hold Big Tech accountable and protect our kids while they’re online.
Do you think Facebook should abandon its Instagram for Kids project? Sign my petition today.
I appreciate your thoughts,
— Lori Trahan
