Indivisibles,
This week is going to be a busy week on the Hill, so let’s take a moment
to make sure we are on the same page.
First, reconciliation: Progressives were able to make major progress
towards advancing President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda, which caused
House leadership to delay the vote on the smaller Bipartisan
Infrastructure Framework (BIF) until October 31, which means Congress must
pass an inclusive reconciliation bill before that deadline. Last week we
hosted a livestream featuring Representative Jayapal + other progressive
Members of Congress to spread the message that it is #TimeToDeliver a
recovery package for our communities and the planet. [ [link removed] ]Click here to
watch it, in case you missed it.
Second, democracy: On Wednesday, we expect to see another failed
procedural vote on Sen. Manchin’s Freedom to Vote Act. If that happens and
the vote fails, it will tee up a big October filibuster showdown once the
Senate is done with reconciliation. [ [link removed] ]Here’s our resource on the Freedom
to Vote Act, in case you want to brush up on the details -- a reminder
that this bill builds on but is not the same as the For the People Act,
and it has a new bill number. So be careful when you’re making calls not
to accidentally call it “S. 1” or “H.R. 1!”
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your 5 weekly to-dos
1. [ [link removed] ]Call your senator and demand they move quickly on the Freedom to
Vote Act. Senate Democrats have released a new version of their
democracy reform bill called the Freedom to Vote Act. The Freedom to
Vote Act builds on the For the People Act and brings us closer to
passing transformational democracy reform this Congress. Call your
senators and let them know you want them to adjust the filibuster now
to pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
2. [ [link removed] ]Make calls on an inclusive recovery package before it’s too late!
Our spooky October 31 deadline is fast approaching. This means we’re
in a key moment for advocacy as we fight to win the most progressive
reconciliation bill possible. With just a few days left until the
House vote, it is urgent that you call your representative and tell
them how important it is that we pass an inclusive recovery bill that
works for everyone. [ [link removed] ]Once you have called your representative click
here to call your senators and demand they pass the bill immediately
after the House sends it over.
3. [ [link removed] ]Call your senator and tell them to protect Roe v. Wade now. The
House has passed the Women's Health Protection Act, a bill aimed at
preserving access to an abortion nationwide, as Republican-led state
legislatures pass countless bills across the country threatening
abortion rights. The bill now has to pass a vote in the Senate, which
is why it is urgent that you call your senator and demand they protect
reproductive rights.
P.S. -- We’re able to fund the ads, call scripts, tools, and work of huge
weeks like last week because of the generous support of grassroots donors,
particularly recurring donors whose support we can count on every month.
