I’m a working mom of four kids, so I know from experience how tough it can be to secure childcare. I also know that the pandemic has only exacerbated this issue for millions of working moms.
As schools pivoted to online learning and summer camps were canceled, many moms had to take on childcare at home. I’ve experienced it myself, balancing working from home while helping my kids stay on track with virtual learning over this past year and a half.
Nearly 2 million women (over 1 million who are mothers) left the workforce due to COVID-19 and women’s participation in the labor force dropped to its lowest in over 30 years . Many of them still haven’t been able to return to work.
I’m leading efforts in Congress to make childcare more accessible and affordable for families struggling with this crisis and I’m counting on your support. Add your name here. → [[link removed]]
Leaving the workforce can have a profound economic impact on women -- not just during the pandemic but over the course of their careers. Studies show that women who take even one year off work earn up to 40% less than those who don’t take time off.
Providing access to affordable childcare is the key to getting women back to work and rebuilding our economy. That’s why I’m fighting for legislation to make powerful investments in the childcare industry, expand access to childcare for families, and make it more affordable. I personally fought to include an amendment that would ensure families pay no more than 7% of their income on childcare.
This isn’t just a woman’s issue -- it’s an economic issue that’s affecting children and the entire American middle class. By investing in childcare we can get women back to work, create hundreds of thousands of jobs, address workforce shortages, and boost workers’ incomes.
Recent polling shows a large majority of American voters support improving access to affordable childcare -- but today, I want to make sure I have your support. Please add your name. [[link removed]]
Thank you for all you do,
Mikie
