Friend,

Today marks 49 years since the passage of the Clean Water Act. This historic law was the first major piece of legislation to address water pollution across our nation, and it remains a vital tool in the fight to protect our nation's rivers, lakes, and streams to this day.

Many people may not know this, but the years before the Clean Water Act were a dark time for our environment. There was widespread concern over water contamination all across the nation, and, in 1969, the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught on fire due to pollution and debris. People rose up to demand a change, and the Clean Water Act was born.

But the Clean Water Act cannot stand alone in the fight to protect water sources across the country. Our environment -- once again -- faces enormous challenges. And action is needed again -- just as it was 49 years ago. We've seen how big, bold legislation like the Clean Water Act has worked in the past, and now we must build upon its successes to demand better protections for our environment.

If you're with me in the work to secure clean water and defend our natural resources, will you let me know by adding your name today? Public pressure led to the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, and public pressure can be used once again for further environmental protections.

I'm proud to be fighting for this type of legislation every day. Right now, Congress must act to pass legislation to support fish passage and recovery and protect endangered orca populations. Right now, Congress must pass legislation to ensure every American can drink clean drinking water free from lead. Right now, Congress must pass legislation to remove PFAS chemicals that are impacting wildlife and public health. Right now, Congress must pass legislation to address the climate crisis and ocean acidification.

The need to protect our waters is urgent. Not only is clean water necessary for the health of our nation's wildlife, but it's essential for public safety and our local economies.

Will you join me today in calling on Congress to secure environmental protections to protect wildlife, natural resources, and our way of life? Add your name next to mine on today's anniversary.

Derek
