Did you know that the fight to protect workers' rights is a big part of West Virginia’s history?
That’s why, for over a century, the GOP has strategically invested in building local political power to chip away at workers’ rights and organized labor across the state.
In 2018, West Virginia teachers launched a strike that sparked a national movement. The solidarity of WV teachers shut down all 680 public schools and won them a 5% raise and a hold on increasing health care premiums – a huge victory! But earlier this year, the Republican-held state Senate passed a bill outlawing all strikes by public school teachers in retaliation.
West Virginians have a long history of fighting for workers’ rights but haven’t always had the support they deserve. Groundwork is committed to investing in states and movements that the Democratic Party has under-resourced for generations.

We’ve learned from political history and from veteran organizers that building long term, year round organizing infrastructure is the best way to build power, remedy injustice, and bring progressive change. The GOP has been pouring money and expertise into these regions for decades and is seeing the returns.
Groundwork Project is ready to stop them.
