Dear John
I’ve got one more urgent action to ask of you before the UN climate talks start in Glasgow.
Boris Johnson’s government has repeatedly asked other nations to act now to curb climate breakdown.
But the UK is still allowing new fossil fuel projects, from a potential coal mine in Cumbria to oil extraction in the North Sea. That’s not climate action, it's hypocrisy. World leaders won’t listen to a government that doesn’t have its own house in order – who would?
We want the government to know we’re not willing to play along. So during the first week of the climate talks we’ll publish open letters in regional newspapers up and down the country. They’ll be signed by local people and demand the UK government ends all support for coal, oil, and gas.
Will you take a minute to sign?

We’ll only send the total number of signatures from people in your area to the local newspapers, so your name won’t be published.
The government has talked noisily about its plans to tell other nations to move away from fossil fuels, make their own climate commitments, and offer climate financing for poorer countries.
But they’re not practicing what they preach. The UK's leaders have so far failed to call off the development of a new coal mine in Cumbria, as well as oil extraction in Surrey and the North Sea.
What’s more, the government is financing fossil fuel projects abroad – providing $1 billion (£730 million) for a huge gas project in Mozambique.
We need as many people as possible to sign one of our letters for it to have an impact. Can you help us out by taking a minute to add your voice?

We want the government to know that we’re not fooled by its polished speeches or empty promises. With the world watching the UK during the climate talks, this is our chance to hold the government to account.
Together, we can push for the ambitious climate solutions we need. Imagine open letters demanding climate action and signed by thousands of local people making their way into newspapers across the country. The government will have to sit up and take notice.
Please do take a minute to sign the open letter. We’ll only send the total number of signatures to local newspapers, so your name won’t be published.
