Hi John,
My colleagues at the NDRC have emailed you about the ins and outs of how Republicans are attempting to gerrymander maps from coast to coast. But I want to take a step back and put this in a broader context.
What we're really talking about here isn't just where the line goes on the map -- we're talking about predetermining election outcomes. And let’s be clear: That's directly at odds with the central tenet of American democracy -- that election results should reflect the will of the voters.
We are up against a party that believes politicians should decide who wins elections, while we believe the people should have the freedom to choose who represents them. We believe in democracy -- and I know you do, too, which is why I hope you'll make a donation today to help us keep giving our all to this fight.
The fight is playing out right now in Texas, where the GOP's congressional map didn’t create a single competitive seat: the outcomes are all predetermined. It's playing out in Ohio, where Republicans drew themselves unearned supermajorities in the state legislature. It's playing out in Georgia, where despite population growth fueled by communities of color, they decreased the voting power of those communities.
You've heard that this is a perilous time for our democracy. These Republican efforts to give themselves power they didn't earn is a major reason why I for one am committed to doing everything I can to stop them before they seize control for the next decade or more. Are you with me?
