Friend,

The author Toni Morrison once said, “The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work.”

Well, friend, we are being distracted with the racist shenanigans of President Trump and David Perdue.

People around the country are going to look at how we respond to these attacks here in Georgia. That’s why we need you to add your name to rebuke these racist distractions and tell the Senate to bring the House’s Raise the Wage Act — guaranteeing a $15 federal minimum wage — to a vote.

On Monday, after Trump’s weekend Twitter tirade where he told four congresswomen of color to go back to where they came from, David Perdue deemed it “outrageous” to consider these tweets racist.

On Wednesday, the President singled out one of these women at a rally in North Carolina and stood silently while a crowd proceeded to chant “send her back.”

Yesterday — one day after the North Carolina rally — the House passed a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. It now goes to the Senate, where David Perdue and the Republicans will let it die. The distraction of racism perpetrated by Trump — and abetted by Perdue and other Republicans — has created a vacuum where coverage of Senate Republicans’ inaction on the minimum wage has skated under the radar.

We cannot afford to waste six more years with David Perdue’s distractions: blocking legislation to raise the minimum wage, failing to enact comprehensive immigration reform, or falling behind on the many other issues actively being made worse by Republican policies.

It’s time Georgia has new leadership representing us. Add your name to help rebuke these distractions and put the Senate to work for you.

We will not sit idly by while this racist administration attacks our people. Thank you for having the courage to do what David Perdue does not — speak up.

– Team Tomlinson
