John --

This week, I joined Democrats in the House to pass the SHIELD Act, an elections security bill that requires political campaigns to report offers of assistance by foreign governments or their agents to the FBI. This bill also closes loopholes to prevent foreign nationals from spending money in our elections.

It should go without saying that this legislation is absolutely vital.

This month we learned that federal prosecutors arrested two Ukrainian-born political operatives who were accused of using a shell company to funnel upwards of $325,000 into a pro-Trump committee. The evidence and our intelligence community also continue to tell us that Donald Trump encouraged foreign interference in our democracy to benefit his re-election effort.

I was disappointed to see my Republican colleagues vote against it and give no indication they intend to take up similar legislation in the Senate. The SHIELD Act was an opportunity for Republicans to finally stand up to keep our democracy intact. Instead, they decided to stand on the sidelines and do nothing.

Election security is not a partisan issue. But until McConnell and his Republican allies realize that, it’s incumbent on each one of us to stand up for the integrity of our democratic process.

I swore a solemn oath to defend our democracy. And despite the political stonewalling, I remain committed to working with my colleagues to fulfill that responsibility.

Thank you for standing by my side.

Mike
