By Whitney Johnson, Director of Visual and Immersive Experiences “Often I remember that evening. No human-created light could be seen except our universe, reminding us what minute specks we are,” writes photographer John Stanmeyer.
He was among herders in Ethiopia’s Rift Valley that evening in early 2013 (pictured above), at the very start of a very long walk that would take Nat Geo Explorer Paul Salopek (and often John) across the world in the footsteps of our ancestors.
Since then, Paul has logged 11,000 miles on his Out of Eden Walk, following the migration of humanity that began some 50,000 to 70,000 years ago. John has hiked alongside him for 500 miles of this journey, often walking backward, to compose the visual narrative of who, as humanity, we are today. (Below, a map of the route, so far.)
