These efforts to erase our history are blatant threats to the truth— and frankly, they are dangerous to the health of our democracy. As a former social studies teacher, John knows firsthand the power knowledge can have in empowering students to join the fight for progress. We can't wish away our country's complicated past of slavery and systemic racism; we have to teach young people the full scope of American history so they can recognize both how we have fallen short of our democratic aspirations and how we can learn from our past to create a more just society.
