Dear Friend,
Senator Joe Manchin has one powerful ally that no one is talking about,
and it’s not Senator Mitch McConnell.
It’s the media.
In his effort to gut the Build Back Better act, Manchin has been driving
the media’s narrative by focusing on the bill’s $3.5 trillion price tag
instead of what is actually in the bill. And by keeping the spotlight on
the money, Manchin and the other corporate Democrats in Congress are
tanking a bill that working families desperately need.
Demand Progress members have sent more than 100,000 letters to Congress
demanding a fully funded Build Back Better bill, and we’re using our
social media reach and membership of nearly 1 million to help refocus this
fight on the transformative programs we need for a progressive future.

The Build Back Better act includes programs that are hugely popular with
the public, like paid family leave and universal pre-K; Medicare expansion
to include dental, vision, and hearing care—and lowering the eligibility
age to 60!—plus elder care; affordable housing; and free community
college.^1
The bill also includes green energy incentives that would put us on a
strong track for combatting the climate crisis.
Major news outlets have let Manchin get away with his diatribe about the
Build Back Better act price tag by leaving unsaid the fact that the
senator is well-funded by the fossil fuel industry and other corporate
interests—corporations who don’t like that the Act is funded in part by
making corporations pay their fair share.^2
If Manchin gets his way, we'll lose our best chance in a generation at
universal pre-K, affordable medications, child tax credits, and a big
investment in solving the climate crisis. And if the media isn’t going to
get the story straight, we are going to make sure to keep beating the drum
until the narrative changes.
