We Dream in Black (WeDiB) is excited to announce the launch of a four-part mural tour series celebrating Dorothy Bolden in Atlanta, Georgia. The murals span four buildings in a five-mile radius that tell different parts of Dorothy Bolden’s story. Part art installation, part monument, the murals honor Dorothy’s contribution to the civil rights movement, her voter registration efforts and her leadership in the fight for domestic worker dignity and rights.
Not in Atlanta? No worries. The virtual tour will give you the ability to view the murals from anywhere in the world while you learn more about Dorothy’s contribution to the domestic worker movement and the work of We Dream in Black today.
Dorothy is part of Atlanta’s long-standing history of Black domestic worker organizing, like the Washerwomen who went on strike back in 1881. In the late sixties, she and other domestic worker leaders in the South organized tens of thousands of workers, the majority of whom were Black, to become members of the National Domestic Workers Union of America.
Today, We Dream in Black (WeDiB) continues down the path Dorothy paved. Throughout the country, our members are employed as nannies, housecleaners and caregivers to elders and people with disabilities. WeDiB’s growing base of members ranges from young workers to elders; members who are US-born and immigrants from across the African diaspora; people of multiple gender identities and sexualities; and individuals of varied class backgrounds and abilities.
These murals are both a tribute to Dorothy’s vision and sacrifice and a recognition of the Dorothy Bolden’s of our time: We Dream in Black domestic worker leaders in the South carrying on her vision and legacy.
