Newsletter October 16, 2021

Dear Friends,

We are very excited to announce that the 29th edition of Film|Neu, Washington's annual festival of new films from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, will take place in a hybrid format from November 18-21, 2021.

In September, the film-lovers of our city breathed a sigh of relief when Landmark's E Street Cinema announced that it would reopen its doors after nearly eighteen months closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are overjoyed at the prospect of returning to our historic host cinema for several screenings, while continuing to offer virtual screenings as well. Our film lineup and full festival schedule, festival trailer, and ticket sales will begin soon – in the meantime, pencil the weekend into your datebook and get ready to watch some new movies!

We have missed having guests in our space at 14th & R – which is why we're delighted to host an evening of open galleries, music, and more, together with our neighbors at The Corner at Whitman-Walker. Join us on the evening of October 29 for a glimpse at a brand new exhibit, as well as an older one you may have missed in the pre-pandemic months.

Film|Neu 2021 - Save the Date!

We are delighted to announce that our Film|Neu showcase of new films from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland will return for its 29th annual edition this November. Our host venue, Landmark’s E Street Cinema, has reopened its doors after eighteen months of remaining closed. We will present a combination of in-person screenings at E Street and virtual screenings on Vimeo, a short films program, a reception at the Goethe-Institut Washington, and more. Save the date - we look forward to launching this year's website and publishing the festival program soon.

A Friday Evening at 14th & R

It is with great excitement that we announce an evening of open galleries, music on our rooftop terrace, a video installation, and more, at the Goethe-Institut Washington and The Corner at Whitman-Walker – both in The Liz at the corner of 14th & R, in the heart of the Logan Circle-U Street neighborhood.

At street-level in The Corner, we will present the original drawings of Berlin-based graphic novelist and illustrator Lukas Jüliger, alongside the sculpture of Baltimore-based multimedia artist Hoesy Corona.

On the third floor, in the Goethe-Institut Washington, check out our bauhaus.photo exhibition, featuring photos that offer insight into the student life at the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany (1919-1933). We also present the video installation Past, Present, Tense. by Berlin-based American artist Christa Joo Hyun D'Angelo, originally part of our summer streaming film series in the scope of the Shaping the Past region-wide project.

Kids Euro 2021: Summer Rebels (Sommer-Rebellen) (2020), dir. Martina Saková

Until October 31, we are co-presenting the German-Slovak feature Summer Rebels along with the Embassy of Germany in the United States and the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, for this fall's virtual edition of the Kids Euro Festival. 300 tickets are available for this sweet and funny family film, so stream it for free via Eventive today!

Summer Rebels tells the story of 11-year-old German youngster Jonas, whose family is scattered between Germany and Slovakia. When Jonas learns that his usual summer trip to visit Grandpa Bernard in Slovakia isn't planned for the summer, he is determined to make it happen anyway - even if it means breaking all the rules.
