Celebrating the Erie Canal's Bicentennial
Much of our region's early economic growth is rooted in the Erie Canal, and in keeping our heritage alive, I am honored to have introduced the bipartisan Erie Canal Commemorative Coin Act this week in Congress. This bill directs the US Treasury to design and produce commemorative coins that celebrate our rich history and the Erie Canal's special role in our country's development.
Construction of the Erie Canal began on July 4, 1817, in Rome, New York. The first official voyage took place just two years later between Rome and Utica. Upon its completion in 1825, the canal crossed 363 miles of upstate New York from Albany to Buffalo. Its historical significance is unmatched in our history. It made New York into the Empire State. For the first time, goods could travel easily from New York City to the emerging settlements on the Great Lakes frontier, facilitating unprecedented westward expansion. Towns sprang up along the canal, and existing cities saw a major boost to their industries.
I'm fighting everyday to restore the same spirit of dynamism and innovation that gave us the Erie Canal to our region once again in order to build a strong economy for all. Thank you to Congressman Paul Tonko for partnering with me on this bipartisan initiative and many other members for supporting it!

Expanding IRS Surveillance is Wrong
Included in the Democrats’ reconciliation package is a provision that would mandate banks, credit unions, and other financial service providers to report each time a customer makes a financial transaction of $600 or more. This includes virtually every bank account in the country.
I support straightforward measures to target and reduce evasion, but this move is an egregious step that violates our privacy. That is why I am cosponsoring the Protecting Financial Privacy Act, which will prohibit the IRS or other federal agencies from creating new mandates that require financial institutions to report data on routine transactions. Read more about the bill here.
The American taxpayers do not want Uncle Sam looking over their shoulder every time they receive a paycheck, have their cars serviced, or pay rent. This commonsense bill solves the problem. It is a simple, commonsense response to this proposed rule change, which represents a massive federal overreach.

Let Me Travel America Act Introduced in Congress
The Biden Administration has repeatedly threatened the requirement of a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for interstate travel. The Let Me Travel America Act that I'm supporting in Congress puts a stop to this. It reiterates what’s already clearly enshrined in our Constitution: the federal government has no legal authority to restrict an individual’s right to interstate travel.
I will continue fighting against federal overreach by the Biden Administration and ensure our rights are not trampled by a power-hungry President and his enablers. Read more about the bill here.

Social Security Offices Must Resume Operations
This week I joined with many of my House colleagues in calling on the Social Security Administration to reopen shuttered field offices. More than 1,500 field offices remain closed across the country and throughout New York, greatly reducing services and contributing to a massive backlog. These offices must reopen, which they can do safely. Click here to read our full letter!
