Though we have made great strides in the U.S. towards protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, the topic is still too often overlooked in the Iranian-American community.

Dear John,

While Pride month has become a widely-celebrated occasion around the world, the lived experience of the LGBTQ+ community is an everyday affair and in many places of the world, including Iran, people continue to face intolerance, violence, and discrimination.

But for the LGBTQ+ community, Pride—and the continued struggle for acceptance and equal rights—continues outside the month of June. And though we have made great strides in the U.S. towards these goals, the topic is still too often overlooked in the Iranian-American community.

That's why I'm pleased to invite you to our panel on Friday, October 22nd at 11am PT/2pm ET entitled "Navigating Queer Identity in the Iranian-American Community." RSVPs are required.

I'll be joined by Dr. Sima Shakhsari (Associate Professor in the Department of Gender, Women & Sexualities Studies at the University of Minnesota), Shawndeez Jadalizadeh (PhD Candidate, Department of Gender Studies at UCLA), and Abdi Nazemian (award-winning author, screenwriter, and producer) to discuss attitudes on queerness and LGBTQ+ rights in the Iranian-American community.

RSVP NOw

Make sure to RSVP for what will be a very moving discussion--and I'll see you next week!

Best,

Dr. Assal Rad
Senior Research Fellow, NIAC
