John, the filibuster is killing us... There are bipartisan gun safety bills before the U.S. Senate right now to address gun violence in America. But the filibuster, an archaic Senate rule, is preventing senators from voting on these common-sense gun safety bills. They've languished for months, gathering dust.
Make no mistake: this is exactly what the gun lobby wants. The filibuster blocks gun safety bills from becoming law. And fewer gun laws equals more profit for the gun lobby and their allies in Congress.
Even shortly after 28 children and school staff were brutally murdered in Sandy Hook, CT, gun lobby-backed politicians used the filibuster to defeat a Brady Background Check expansion bill. Over 90% of Americans — and a clear majority of senators — supported the bill, but the filibuster killed it. In the years since, tragedy after tragedy, Congress has failed to pass any meaningful gun reform bills because of the filibuster. That’s why we’re demanding Congress end the filibuster right now.
Thank you for your advocacy and support, Team Brady
RSVP: “Service Never Stops: Veterans Preventing Gun Suicide” on Tuesday, October 19 In America, gun suicide has an outsized impact on the veteran community. Each day, 63 veterans die by gun suicide. But veterans from coast to coast are uniting to address this crisis by practicing and promoting safe firearm storage.
Moderated by JJ Janflone of our podcast, “Red, Blue, and Brady,” you’re invited to hear from four veterans leading the charge for safe gun storage, including Shay DeBarr (U.S. Marine Corps), Chris Jachimiec (U.S. Air Force), Charles Tawiah (U.S. Navy), Sean McDaniel (U.S. Army), and End Family Fire Director Ted Bonar, Psy.D.
Brady Illinois Takes Action Against “Ghost Guns” In recent years, homemade, untraceable “ghost guns” have proliferated throughout Chicago, contributing to the alarming rates of trafficked firearms into Black and Brown communities. Prohibited purchasers — like gun traffickers — purchase and spread ghost guns because they’re extremely easy to access: a background check is NOT required to buy one.
This week, Brady Illinois Co-Chair and gun violence survivor Delphine Cherry was proud to join Cook County (IL) Sheriff Tom Dart to introduce landmark legislation to combat the spread of ghost guns.
Delphine lost two of her children, Tyesa (16) and Tyler (20), to gun violence in Illinois. She understands the toll of gun violence and leads Brady Illinois to advocate for stronger gun laws, like the regulation of ghost guns. Delphine Cherry (r) and Simone (l), Delphine's granddaughter, advocating for legislation to regulate "ghost guns." We thank Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart for his bold leadership on ghost guns. We call on the Illinois General Assembly to pass this bill without delay!

We discuss the shooting and domestic violence to bring greater awareness to the issue. Later in the episode, we’re joined by Kate Ranta, an author and domestic violence survivor, and Rachel Louise Snyder, an author and professor, to continue the conversation about domestic violence and the role firearms play in these situations. Berkeley Police Recover 4 Guns In 4 days; 3 Were Ghost Guns, Berkeleyside We are deeply saddened by the passing of Barbara Lautman, the former executive director of the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, the precursor of the Brady Center. Barbara was a tireless gun violence prevention activist who dedicated her life to public safety.
She began her work in the movement as the communications director for Handgun Control Inc., which eventually evolved into Brady, and continued working for the organization for years to come. Barbara was an indefatigable activists. She helped pass the landmark Brady Bill and found the Legal Action Project — now known as Brady Legal. Barbara had no problem standing up to the NRA either — she once debated them on the need for background checks and common-sense gun violence prevention policies (you can watch the clip here).
It goes without saying that we are devastated by the loss of one of our own. Barbara played an integral role in shaping Brady as we know it today, and we’re forever grateful for her contributions to our organization. We are proud to honor her as this week's Gun Violence Prevention Hero of the Week.
