While they currently make up only 1% of all local and federal officials in the United States, Latinos—who are one-fifth of the U.S. population—are undoubtedly claiming their power in our democracy. For starters, more than half of eligible Latinos voted in 2020 for the first time in U.S. history. That’s a big deal. But Latinos are also becoming more politically engaged. Many of them—such as our rockstar alums, Marcela Mitaynes, Catalina Cruz, Jessica González-Rojas, Amanda Farías, Alexa Avilés, Pierina Sanchez, and Elisa Crespo in New York (all featured in City & State NY’s Latino Power 100 list!) [[link removed]] —are leading our movement to create a democracy that represents and works for everyone. As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we remain committed to training more Latinos to run for office, win, and lead because they’re the leaders our communities and democracy need.

Not only is the "Remain in Mexico" poicy [[link removed]] inhumane and unlawful, it is now set to continue under the Biden administration. This policy, first enacted under Trump, perpetuates an anti-immigrant, xenophobic legacy that harms thousands of asylum seekers and violates their rights.
As a community of New Americans and BIPOC, we are outraged by this poilcy and demand the Biden administration to end MPP for good. It's the right thing to do and must happen ASAP.

And Updates

Did you hear our big news? We've teamed up with Snapchat to help more young people run for office!
Seeing as how Snapchat reaches 90% of young Americans between the ages of 13-24, we have a HUGE opportunity to normalize the conversation around running for office, increase the level of civic literacy among young people, and help get more young New Americans elected to state legislatures and other offices across the U.S. (Currently, of the 7,383 state legislators, just 6% are under 35 and 3.5% are New Americans.)

Check out Snapchat’s Run for Office Mini [[link removed]] now to get started and learn about elected positions in your community. Our alumna Narissa Ayoub, who wants to run for office one day, already has [[link removed]] :
“Having all the information there, in one place, and for it to be so easy and accessible, I think it will create a huge difference. I think people don't know exactly what [they] can run for, so it doesn't have to be these big deal offices like mayor or state legislature or governor. There are things in your hometown that are open like precinct delegate, or city clerk or school board.”
