Dear Neighbor:
This week, House Democrats passed legislation to raise the debt ceiling into early December and avoid what would be a disastrous federal default. Raising the debt ceiling is crucial to ensuring the United States can meet financial obligations it’s already made, 97% of which occurred during the former Administration. In addition, Democrats in Congress are continuing to work hard to pass long term budget legislation that meets the everyday needs of working families across America and tackles the climate crisis.
On Wednesday I hosted a telephone townhall to explain what’s in the Build Back Better legislation for CA-33 constituents. I also discussed key issues such as passing voting rights legislation, combating veteran homelessness, and more. Please click here to listen to my full telephone townhall.
Improving the West LA VA and addressing veteran homelessness has been a top priority of mine in Congress. Last week, I joined U.S. Secretary of Veteran Affairs Denis McDonough, Chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee Mark Takano, and others for a tour of permanent supportive housing sites at the West LA VA campus. I am grateful to Secretary McDonough for visiting and look forward to working together to ensure that one who served our country goes without housing.
The climate crisis is here, and unless we act now, young Americans and future generations will continue to pay the price. We must do more to protect our environment, which is why my fellow Co-Chair of the California Coastal Caucus Rep. Julia Brownley and I called for an end to offshore drilling after the Huntington Beach oil spill. The California Department of Justice is investigating the cause of the spill to determine what, if anything, could have been done to prevent or minimize it. Congress must pass the West Coast Ocean Protection Act and the Build Back Better Act to prevent new leases for offshore oil drilling. I’m also working on legislation that removes caps on penalties for oil companies if they have an oil spill.
TODAY: The next round of tax cuts for American families with children started going out. These monthly Child Tax Credit payments are helping families with kids make ends meet. If you’re eligible, please use this tool to keep track of your payments.

COVID-19 Updates
I’m very pleased that in CA-33 and California, the pandemic is starting to ease. Every day, more and more people get vaccinated. As we continue along this path, we will eventually get back to normal. It’s crucial that we all continue to keep our community safe and healthy by following public health guidelines.
Pfizer boosters are now available for select groups in LA County. Pfizer boosters are safe and offer enhanced protection for those who are at increased risk of severe illness or death due to COVID-19. Eligible LA County residents include:
